White Space

I have always gone back and forth between displaying images without a border or with a border. This dilemma even carries over to my print making style. Lately, I have flip flopped to showing white borders on images that are posted on my social media feeds, while at the same time preferring to print and display images that go all the way to the edge.

The two styles often create a completely different viewing experience, one which I can’t really understand. I know that it has something to do with the science behind how our eye/brain connection works, but in the end, seems to be very subjective. For the last two years, I have been printing my images with Blazing Editions, using their incredible metal paper and flush mounting system. These images really pop off of the walls that they are hung on.

However, of late, I find myself intrigued by their mounting that uses a black border to separate the edge of the image from the edge of the frame. It is nowhere near as big a contrast as a traditional frame/Matt combination, but it does add some visual element to the print that I don’t completely understand. I would imagine that this transition in my viewing preference, is somehow aligned to my desire to put a white border on images that I show online. I would be curious what you think?
